Cold Season Strategy…
Now that its December, we get to enjoy some of our favorite things. Hot chocolate, snow days, decorating for the holidays…the list is endless. Although there are many things we can enjoy during the winter season, it also means we have to fight off things like catching a cold. Keep your immune system strong by eating foods containing high amounts of Vitamin C. This may help you avoid catching whatever it is that’s going around.
Large Juicy Clementines are perfect to toss in your brown bag for a healthy snack. They are loaded with Vitamin C which is just what you need if you want to avoid getting sick.
Honey doesn’t just help those who are already sick, but it has great antibacterial qualities. It tastes great and you can put it on pretty much anything.
Most people focus so much on getting Vitamin C into their diet, they aren’t aware of the importance of other Vitamins and Minerals that your body needs. Zinc boosts your immune system, if you aren’t getting enough Zinc it may make you susceptible to certain infections (especially children and the elderly). Zinc has been shown to effect the severity and duration of a cold. Start adding foods that contain Zinc into your daily diet. So grab some Dark Chocolate, Peanuts, Roasted Pumpkin Seeds and Sesame Seeds are all fantastic sources of zinc.
Already Suffering…
Unfortunately many of us can’t afford to take “sick days”. So if you’ve gotta go into work, try and make it bearable. Have your loved one make you Chicken Noodle Soup with Ginger, using Bigelow Ginger Snappish Tea for supper the night before. Make extras to bring with you to work and heat up in the microwave. Chicken Noodle Soup has been a comfort for the common cold for years. If you don’t have any leftovers, bring Lipton Soup Secrets to work with you along with some Nabisco Premium Crackers to dunk.
Honey is fantastic to add to your food when you’ve got that awful sore throat. Pick up some Golden Blossom Honey to bring with you to work so you can add it to whatever you’re eating or drinking.
A special trick we learned after having a delightful visit from the doctor last year, helps anyone who has a sore throat. Add some salt to a glass of water and take a nice big sip…but don’t swallow! Gargle. We thought it sounded pretty strange but it actually helped a lot.
Adding the Ginger Snappish Tea to the mix has been said to help soothe your stomach. Drinking Ginger Tea is a well known remedy for a runny nose. So if you’re sick of sniffling around your coworkers…drink up!
Spice up your lunch. Adding hot and spicy food will actually help you fight off the cold. It will get your blood circulating and help oxygen get to your organs. This is referred to as “Warming Therapy”, which can help you fight off the common cold. So add a little Tabasco Sauce on top of your sandwich, or some Budweiser Hot Wing Sauce. It helps stimulate your taste buds as well, if you haven’t been able to taste any of your food.
Many studies have supported the theory that raw garlic can actually cure a cold. Garlic contains compounds that have been shown to boost the immune system considerably. When cooked however, garlic seems to lose the “good stuff” that will help clear up that cold. So make sure you have it raw. Have it in small portions to avoid indigestion. We suggest adding fresh chopped raw garlic to some salad dressing before drizzling over your salad. Try adding it to Vidalia Onion Vinegarette Dressing.
Remember to pay extra attention to staying hydrated. When you’re sick, your body needs to get plenty of water. Pick up Poland Spring 24 Pack of Water to keep in the fridge. Make sure you’re always carrying around a bottle. We suggest adding a lemon wedge. Lemons have a laundry list of amazing health benefits. Lemons are fantastic to have when you’re sick. They contain Vitamin C and bioflavonoids. This combination makes Vitamin C much more effective. If you have a fever, make sure you drink some water with lemon. It increases perspiration, which will help break your fever.
