Hot Cross Buns are popular to eat around the Lenten Season. But have you ever wondered why? We were curious as to what exactly the reason is for the high demand of these little buns around this time of year. Many Christians eat Hot Cross Buns on Good Friday, the cross is a symbol for the Resurrection. There was actually an attempt to ban Hot Cross Buns in England. However, the popularity of the pastry was too high and Queen Elizabeth I permitted them to be sold in bakeries during Easter and Christmas.
There are also many superstitions linked with the sweet, spicy bun. One belief is that sharing a hot cross bun with another person will form a special bond of friendship meant to last through the entire year. Others believe the cross on the bun means you should be kissed before eating them.
Regardless of your beliefs or superstitions, there’s one thing we can all agree on…their distinctively delicious taste. Grab a package fresh from the oven in our Bakery Department. We top our Hot Cross Buns with a yummy Buttercream Frosting!
