Refreshing Treats…
Take a pound of your Northwest Bing Cherries ($1.49 lb – FRUGAL FRIDAY ONLY) and rinse them off. After they are all pitted and stemmed, puree them. Strain to remove the skins. Take your Ziegler’s Pink or White Lemonade ($1.99 ea – Half Gallon) and add the cherry puree into a large pitcher. Test it before serving, you may want to add a dash of sugar. Serve chilled. Bing cherries darken as they ripe. So the darker the cherries, the sweeter the flavor.
Although many of us would agree summer is our favorite season, it can also be a messy one. Especially when the kids are around with those melting Popsicles. We have a trick that works wonders and will take care of them dripping all over your living room rug. Take a cupcake wrapper and stick it through the bottom of the Popsicle stick. It will act as a bowl to catch any juices from the pop.
Dinnertime Favorites…
Grill your Corn on the Cob. Set your grill to medium and remove the inside layers of the corn husks. Be sure to keep the outer layer attached to the corn. Place the corn on the grill and put the cover on. Once the husk becomes browned on one side, turn on another side until corn is completely cooked. This should take approximately 6 minutes. Serve and enjoy. If you want to try something different with your corn, mix the grilled corn kernels in with your favorite salsa.
Pineapple Salsa is one of the many reasons we love summer. Try serving with fish for dinner, or dunk some chips in for an appetizing snack.
Something Fun…
If you are someone that doesn’t like seeing food go to waste, we have a fun activity for the kids. Next time you’re about to toss those extra potatoes in the garbage, save them. Slice them in half and let the kids use them as stamps. Try carving the side that’s sliced into different shapes. An even better idea: let them decorate their own aprons so they can help you cook in the kitchen!
Fill up a pitcher of water and throw a few Tetley Tea Bags (2/$5 – 100 ct) in. Place it outside in direct sunlight to brew your very own Sun Tea.
Create your own Herb-Infused Olive Oil. Grab an empty glass jar that can be sealed tightly. Pick out any fresh herbs you’d like to put in the bottle. Wash them off, and blanch them for about 3 minutes in boiling water. Strain them and rinse with cold running water. Pat them well to absorb the moisture and let dry overnight. Fill the bottle up about 1/4 of the way with the herbs and pour in the olive oil. Store in a cool and dry place.
