Chestnuts
“Roasting on an open fire” is one way to cook them but here’s a couple of methods we think are a little easier. Read on you might be inspired to start a new Christmas tradition of enjoying chestnuts with your family and friends this holiday season.
Here’s how to get them out of a shell:
Use a sharp knife and make a single cut (about 3/4 of an inch) along the flat side of each chestnut. Peel away the shell. Then peel the brown inner skin.
Cooking Ideas:
Roasting (when you want them to taste like they do in New York City):
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Cut a small “X” in the top of each nut (about 3/4 to an inch long)
Arrange them on a cookie tray in a single layer and bake for 10-12 minutes.
Peel with a sharp knife and enjoy while hot; that’s when they’re the best!
Microwaving:
Cut the chestnut as mentioned earlier. Put them on a microwavable dish, single layer, no more than one pound at a time.
One pound should be cooked on the high setting for no more than 8 minutes.
After cooking, peel away the shell and the brown inner skin. Now they’re ready to add to your favorite recipe.
