Composting is on the way. Trucchis is working with a company called Frades Disposal of New Bedford, which will soon take away compostable material from each store and turn it into a liquefied state that will eventually become fertilizer for golf courses.
The machines that do this are called digesters, and Frades has several of them. Trucchis will be the first supermarket chain in the area to use the system, which is simple and easy. Employees and managers at each store are devising the best ways to collect the leftover food and waste that will be composted. The program will be a win-win for the company and the environment. Trucchis will save money in the long run, since the company won’t have to pay as much to have this waste hauled off to a transfer station; and it, naturally, is better for the environment.
Plans call for this process to start in the coming weeks, joining our already successful program that recycles cardboard and plastic.
Also of note, a comprehensive paper-recycling program has been instituted at Trucchi’s headquarters.
